Thank you!

Amherst Survival Center provides food, clothing, healthcare and community by volunteers to residents of Hampshire & Franklin Counties.

Thank you for visiting the Amherst Survival Center's Valley Gives Day page! The Center is a warm, safe space, open to all.

Since 1976, the Amherst Survival Center has been a welcoming community where families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet can come for food, clothing, healthcare, and companionship and relief from isolation. The ASC serves close to 6,000 people each year primarily through volunteer efforts. Our 200-plus volunteers do everything from cooking and cleaning to providing medical care and stocking pantry shelves.

Thanks to your generosity on Valley Gives Day 2013, we've been providing fresh, local milk to nearly 700 households through our Food Pantry, which includes close to 450 children. We were also able to give extra milk to families with school-age children in our Kids Summer BOOST. With your support this year, we will be able to continue providing fresh milk, including extra milk for our expanded BOOST program where families with school-age children will get extra food every month that has a school vacation.

We need a Milk Fund because our Food Pantry is stocked with foods that are donated by stores, individuals and community food drives or accessed through the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Fresh milk is not available through any of these sources, as the Food Bank provides only Ultra Heat Treated (UHT) shelf-stable boxed milk. Meanwhile, participants in our Food Pantry regularly ask for fresh milk. Milk contains essential nutrients for bone, muscle and heart health including calcium, vitamin D, potassium and magnesium. Because of our Valley Gives community, fresh local milk has been offered in our Food Pantry for the past year.

We are proud to partner with the local dairy cooperative, Our Family Farms, to stock our Pantry with fresh low-fat milk. We're excited that the Amherst Survival Center Milk Fund will support our neighbors and their children, as well as local agriculture and local farmers.
