Center for New Americans is an education and resource center for immigrants in W. Mass. We teach English and provide free support services.
Imagine leaving family and friends behind and moving to a new community. You do not know the language, you are not familiar with the culture, but you have chosen to build a new life for yourself. Your home country is ravaged by war, or there are few economic opportunities or you are threatened for your beliefs, or your children have no access to school. Imagine how lonely and isolated you would feel ... until you can speak the language. Then, doors begin to open.
Center for New Americans (CNA) has been serving immigrants in W. Mass for 20 years. We serve people who come from over 50 different countries, including Cape Verde, Ecuador, China, Ghana, Cambodia, Peru, Moldvoa, Vietnam, and speak over 35 different languages.
We have program sites in Northampton (our headquarters), Amherst, Greenfield, and Turners Falls.
We offer a spectrum of classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ranging from beginner to high intermediate, technology instruction, and assistance with citizenship applications. We offer employment counseling and referrals to healthcare, housing, and other services.
We welcome volunteers who can offer students individual attention.
Our program offers a warm and welcoming community, and our alumni remain engaged as volunteers and mentors.
Having attained proficiency in English, our students pursue additional education, obtain better jobs, buy their own houses, help their children in school, and start their own businesses.
