CMSS is dedicated to changing lives through music by creating access to the arts for all in Greater Springfield.
Community Music School of Springfield was founded 30 years ago as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making quality arts instruction, (particularly music) participation and exposure accessible and affordable to all people of the Greater Springfield area. CMSS is proud to bring together people of different ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds and economic circumstances to make music in an environment that respects diversity and encourages creativity. CMSS's 30 year committment to providing financial aid and scholarships to area children remains a cornerstone of our organization and our mission. We offer lessons and classes across 33 different instruments and voice, and are home to Massachusetts only full day art-infused preschool and kindergartenj, Prelude Preschool and Kindergarten of the Arts. Our commitment to creating access to the arts is expressed in our many Springfield based public school and community center residencies, as well as in the many free to the public community based events at our concert hall, Robyn Newhouse Hall.
CMSS is located in the heart of downtown Springfield accessible by public transportation, in a historic 1930 building that features green energy for cooling and heating. Each year, with the support of amazing donors, we are able to provide over 5,000 music lessons to children in need. However, despite the success of our Annual Fund Drive, we still have a waiting list of families who desire a musical arts education, yet don't have the financial ability to do so.
CMSS is the home of Prelude Preschool of the Arts, the only full day arts-infused preschool in Western Massachusetts. Our innovative, integrated approach to learning features a warm creative atmosphere to encourage a young child's imagination, curiosity and intellect.
In addition to lessons and classes, CMSS provides concerts for children, youth, and adults at affordable rates that feature a wide array of talented multicultural performers. These concerts take place year-round in Robyn Newhouse Hall, the school's lovely performance space.
Each year, an esteemed faculty of 50 music educators will mentor and instruct students on-site and off-site at many collaborative schools and organizations.
Our community centered arts education organization has provided our community with an essential tools to inspire young and old over the past 30 years, due to the generous support of donors and sponsors. CMSS is a magical place, and we welcome you to visit us for a tour, a music lesson, or an upcoming performance.
