COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL OF SPRINGFIELD INC
CMSS is dedicated to providing access to musical arts and changing lives through music, particularly for children, in Greater Springfield
CMSS began as a dream nearly 30 years ago in 1983 to create a school that would make quality arts instruction (particularly music), participation, and exposure accessible and affordable to all people of the Greater Springfield area. Many of our founding faculty are still here today and continue to teach and lead the school.
Now, heading toward 2013, CMSS is a well-respected urban center for the arts, located in the heart of downtown Springfield with a faculty of 50 musicians/educatiors. The school's committment to providing financial aid and scholarships to deserving students remains a cornerstone of the organization. Each year, with the support of incredible donors, we are able to provide over 5,000 music lessons to children in need. However, despite the success of our Annual Fund Drive, we still have a waiting list of families who desire a musical arts education, yet don't have the financial ability to do so.
CMSS is also the home of Prelude Preschool of the Arts, the only full day arts-infused preschool in Western Massachusetts. Our innovative, integrated approach to learning features a warm creative atmosphere to encourage a young child's imagination, curiosity and intellect.
In addition to lessons and classes, CMSS provides concerts for children, youth, and adults at affordable rates that feature a wide array of talented multicultural performers. These concerts take place year-round in Robyn Newhouse Hall, the school's lovely performance space.
Each year, an esteemed faculty of 50 music educators will mentor and instruct students on-site and off-site at many collaborative schools and organizations.
CMSS is proud to bring together people of different ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds and economic circumstances to make music in an environment that respects diversity and encourages creativity. This great organization exists and continues to thrive as a result of the philanthropic support of its many donors and sponsors. The school always welcomes visits from inidividuals and organizations, so please stop by for a tour, a music lesson, or a performance.
