Craig's Doors was founded in the summer of 2011 with the belief that all people deserve access to the safety, dignity and privacy of a home
Behind every Door is a Story...
Our story begins when a group of caring individuals became involved with an emergency shelter in Amherst, Massachusetts. Some had a long history of working with people who were homeless, while others were just starting. Over the course of the next two years, these individuals would get to know the guests at the shelter and their stories, desires and dreams.
In the summer of 2011, the organization that had run the shelter for the past two seasons decided that they would not run it again. A coalition of willing volunteers, concerned members of the community, and several organizations came together to found Craig's Doors - A Home Association.
In the fall of 2011, Craig's Doors began operating the Amherst Emergency Shelter and renamed it Craig's Place, in honor of Craig D. Lorraine (1966-2011) Craig was a beloved and cherished brother of four sisters, and a 1984 graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School. Well known in the communities of Northampton and Amherst, Craig was a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and a proud Navy veteran who served his country during the Persian Gulf War. A talented street musician, Craig played his wooden marimba on the streets as a way of giving back to the community. His untimely death in February of 2011 saddened many.
On one particularly cold night, at the end of a difficult day, Craig expressed this wish to a staff member:
“Sometimes I just wish I had a door … a door I can close!”
