The Gateway Education Foundation supports the classrooms and schools of the Gateway Regional School District in Huntington, MA.
When Assistant Principal Elizabeth Bienia was approaching a milestone birthday (and we won't mention which one!) she asked the family members and friends who came to celebrate to make a donation to the Gateway Education Foundation, in lieu of gifts. They did, raising $500 for "Liz's Literacy Fund." Gateway teachers were able to apply for the funding to support a literacy program in their school. A Summer Reading Program was selected for Chester Elementary School. Students were recruited in late spring and received a reading log to track their minutes of reading. They, and their families, attended a summer reading celebration at a local library, which included snacks, a storyteller, and a bag of books for each participating child to keep. Research shows that having books in the home helps children become better readers, but this is not a simple thing for families in a school with a 45% poverty rate. Through the thoughtful generosity of one of Gateway's administrators, the Gateway Education Foundation was able to make a difference for a generation of readers.
