GCC students bring their children to help raise funds for GCC at Mike's Maze this year

To help ensure access to every student who seeks an education, GCC is raising funds to establish a child care center on the main campus.

The need for a child care center to provide stable, quality care is clear. GCC is the only community college in Massachusetts without a child care center and our students should no longer be the only community college students without access to safe, affordable, campus-based care for their children.

The results of a recent Greenfield Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) assessment tool indicate that the case for a child care center at GCC is strong - 35% of responding GCC students use some form of child care for the children who live at home with them, and nearly half (49%) of those affirm that they would have to withdraw from school if they had not pieced together the child care arrangements they currently have in place.

In addition, residents living below the poverty line in the Franklin County, Hampshire County and North Quabbin Area communities who are served by this college deserve access to the same level of care for their children as those in other communities across the state. The fact is that 34.6% of female headed households with children under 18 in our area have income below the poverty line.

GCC is working to build a child care center, through collaboration with Community Action's Parent-Child Development Center, that will support:

  1. the child care needs of residents in our community, who live in poverty and seek a way out
  2. the child care needs of GCC students who attend classes and seek to obtain a college education as the first step in changing their lives
  3. the educational needs of students/faculty in GCC’s Education academic program who require supervised practicum hours as part of the program accreditation
