Sunnyside is one of the area’s longest running, most respected early childhood centers in Western Masschusetts. Begun as a parent cooperative with support from Smith College, Sunnyside provides care for children ages 1.5 to six. Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC), Sunnyside has been named one of ten exemplary programs nationwide by the NAEYC for its expertise in Engaging Diverse Families.

Sunnyside provides a homey environment; more like extended family than institutional care. Our belief is that for children to feel safe, secure, and nurtured, children and parents must establish close, personal relationships amongst themselves and with staff.

Fostering social-emotional development is the heart of successful early childhood education. Our curriculum focuses on building social skills, supporting a positive self-concept, and enhancing self-esteem.

Our experienced and highly skilled teachers are friendly and enthusiasticd. Our teaching staff meets state EEC requirements for education and experience. Smith College work-study students complement our staff. Sunnyside engages consulting services from both a clinical psychologist and a pediatrician.

The cooperative model means that parents contribute three hours of work a month to Sunnyside. Options for work hours include service on a committee, work at fundraising events or admissions events, leaf raking or shopping for snacks served each day. Every family participate in a Saturday morning cleaning party each semester. Participation in work together helps parents feel more involved in the Sunnyside community, strengthening relationships between families and ensuring the school is a more familiar place for all family members.
